The Crossing celebrates the Caledonian Canal and the local community that surrounds it. It marks the Caledonian’s historic innovative engineering, its contribution to Scottish history and its place in the story of the Scottish Enlightenment.
The five-day Crossing will gather together a flotilla to travel the entire length of the canal from Banavie, Fort William to Muirtown basin, Inverness the Highland capital of Scotland. In a programme of events and entertainment along the route, the event will highlight the drama of the navigation of the canal and the many influences on Highland life through song, musical interludes, story telling and dance the culture of the area.
The visual impact of a fleet of over 20 craft, typifying the various types of craft that have used the Canal over the years will leave a lasting impression with spectators, local participants and the local community. We anticipate audiences in the region of 40,000.
The event will feature as part of Homecoming Scotland.
